WAIPAHU, HI – A moped rider was critically injured in a collision with a vehicle in the Waipahu area on Monday morning, the Honolulu Police Department reported.
The police department’s Traffic Division learned that a 71-year-old man was riding a moped westbound on Waipahu Street at about 6:22 a.m. and tried to make a left turn into a driveway. The moped was struck by a vehicle heading east on Waipahu Street.
The moped operator was ejected onto the roadway and transported via Emergency Medical Services to an area hospital. Initially he was listed in serious condition but later was downgraded to critical condition. The rider was not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident, police said.
The driver of the vehicle, a 48-year-old woman, was not injured and stayed at the scene.
At this time, investigators do not believe that speed, drugs or alcohol were contributing factors in the collision. The investigation is ongoing.
