HONOLULU, HI – A moped rider was critically injured in an accident in the Airport area on New Year’s Day, according to the Honolulu Police Department.
A preliminary investigation indicated that the 61-year-old rider was heading west on Kamehameha Highway at about 5:50 a.m. when he made a left turn onto Paiea Street. The moped rider lost control while trying to avoid a female pedestrian who was crossing Paiea Street in a marked crosswalk against the “Do Not Walk” signal, near the intersection of North Nimitz Highway.
The rider was ejected onto the roadway and was transported to an area hospital, where he was initially listed in critical condition before being upgraded to serious condition. The man was not wearing a helmet at the time of the collision, police said.
Investigators do not believe speed was a contributing factor in the incident, but have yet to determine whether drugs or alcohol were involved.
