VOLCANO, HI – Hawai‘i Island police said they are investigating a crash in Volcano early Saturday morning that left two people dead.
According to a news release, the wreck took place early Saturday morning in the area of the 24-mile marker on Highway 11
Police responding at about 1:14 a.m. learned that the driver of a 2019 Jeep Renegade had been heading south, Ka‘ū bound, when the vehicle crossed the centerline and collided head-on with a 1996 Toyota Camry.
The Camry driver, a 54-year-old man, and his 48-year-old female passenger, were pronounced dead several hours later after being taken to the Hilo Benioff Medical Center. Both were from Volcano. Their names have not yet been released.
The operator of the Jeep, a 39-year-old Kona woman, was hospitalized in stable condition.
Police investigating the collision believe inattention and drugs may have been contributing factors.
