KAHULUI, HI – Maui police are investigating a fatal pedestrian crash that took place Thursday night in Kahului, reports KITV.
The incident happened on Hana Highway near Hansen Road. According to police, the victim was struck by a 1995 Chevrolet Camaro as it traveled on the highway’s asphalt shoulder. The pedestrian, a 24-year-old man from Kula, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the Camaro, identified as 71-year-old Ronald Hoilien, was arrested on suspicion of second-degree negligent homicide. He was later released pending further investigation as police try to determine the cause of the crash. Hoilien was not wearing his seat belt at the time of the accident, police said.
