KAHULUI, HI – Maui Police said one person was killed and another was injured when their motorcycle crashed in Kahului early Saturday morning.
According to the Honolulu Star-Advertiser, a 25-year-old man was driving a 2012 Yamaha YZF-R6 with an 18-year-old woman as his passenger on Hookele Street shortly after midnight.
An investigation found that the man was not able to navigate a right bend in the roadway near Pakaula Street and crossed over into the opposite lane. The motorcycle then hit a curb, a tree, and a speed limit sign on the shoulder of the roadway.
Both people on the motorcycle were ejected onto the roadway. The motorcyclist suffered fatal injuries, while his passenger was hospitalized in stable condition. Both were wearing their helmets at the time.
Police are continuing to investigate the crash, and have yet to determine whether speed, drugs or alcohol were contributing factors.
