HONOLULU, HI – A collision in Windward Oahu on Sunday afternoon claimed the life of a moped rider, according to the Honolulu Star-Advertiser.
The fatal crash took place on Kamehameha Highway near Johnson Road in the vicinity of Kualoa Beach Park at about 2:50 p.m. A preliminary investigation by the Honolulu Police Department found that a 23-year-old man was riding a moped southbound “when he attempted to execute a wheelie”.
The man lost control of the moped and entered the northbound lane, where he collided with a bus driven by a 53-year-old man. The moped rider was transported to an area hospital in critical condition, and was later pronounced dead. The bus driver was not injured and stayed at the scene.
Police said the moped rider was not wearing a helmet at the time of the collision. Investigators do not believe that speed, drugs or alcohol were contributing factors in the incident.
