WAIKOLOA, HI – A man was killed and two children were hospitalized after a single-vehicle accident in Waikoloa early Tuesday morning.
According to a news release from the Hawaii Police Department, the incident occurred near the 5-mile marker on Waikoloa Road (Highway 191).
Investigators learned that 27-year-old Samiu Kealoha Kama Olevao was driving a 1998 Lexus ES300 sedan traveling east at about 1:30 a.m. when he failed to negotiate a right turn.
The vehicle crossed the double solid yellow lines, then went off the makai shoulder of the road, rolled several times, and landed on a rock embankment. The driver, who was not wearing a seat belt, was ejected from the vehicle as it rolled.
Olevao was pronounced dead after being taken to Kona Community Hospital. Two girls in the car, ages 4 and 3, were transported to North Hawaii Community Hospital for treatment and were discharged.
Police believe that speed and impairment were contributing factors in the wreck.
