MAILI, HI – An accident in Maili late Tuesday night claimed the life of a man in a wheelchair, the Honolulu Star-Advertiser reports.
The pedestrian collision happened on Farrington Highway west of Kaukama Street at about 11:39 p.m. Honolulu police said the victim was a 62-year-old man who was crossing the roadway in his wheelchair going north, outside of a marked crosswalk. He was struck by an eastbound vehicle driven by a 36-year-old man.
The pedestrian was taken to an area hospital by Emergency Medical Services and was pronounced dead. The driver and his passenger, a 33-year-old woman, were not injured and stayed at the scene.
Police do not believe that speed, drugs or alcohol were contributing factors in the fatal crash but are continuing their investigation.
This was Oahu’s 46th traffic fatality of the year, compared to 23 at the same time in 2024.
