HILO, HI – Hawai‘i Island police announced the arrest of a driver involved in a fatal collision on Daniel K. Inouye Highway last Thursday night.
An investigation found that 31-year-old Marvin Neth of Pāhoa was driving a 2015 Nissan SUV east Hilo bound when the incident took place shortly after 11 p.m. Police said Neth was overtaking another vehicle and lost control on the wet roadway. The Nissan went off the east-bound shoulder at the 18 mile marker and rolled several times before coming to a stop.
A passenger in the back seat was pronounced dead after being taken to Hilo Medical Center. He was identified as 46-year-old Steven Jonathan of Hilo. He did not appear to have been wearing a seat belt. A 61-year-old Hilo man riding in the front was transported to the same hospital with what were described as substantial injuries.
Neth was treated for minor injuries and released. He was then arrested on multiple charges, including negligent homicide, reckless driving, and operating a vehicle under the influence of an intoxicant.
He remained in custody pending further investigation. Police believe that speed, impairment, and reckless driving were the main factors in the wreck.
