KIHEI, HI – A moped accident at a Maui intersection has claimed the life of a 62-year-old man, reports the Honolulu Star-Advertiser.
The victim was identified as Kenneth Gricus of Kihei. According to police, Gricus was riding a 2022 YN moped northbound shortly before 10 a.m. on May 28 when he lost control near a roundabout in the area of Liloa Drive and Piikea Avenue.
The moped started weaving and collided with a raised curb near the south crosswalk. Gricus was ejected onto the roadway and was transported to Maui Memorial Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead on Monday morning. He was not wearing a helmet at the time of the fatal crash.
Investigators do not believe speed was a contributing factor in the incident, but have yet to determine whether drugs or alcohol played any role.
