HONOLULU, HI – A man was critically injured in a moped accident in the Aiea area last week, according to the Honolulu Police Department.

The single-vehicle crash took place along Kamehameha Highway on June 8 at about 12:30 a.m.   It was reported to the police department’s Traffic Division that a moped rider was heading east when he lost control.  The moped struck the curb of the center median and then hit a chain-like fence.

The moped rider, a 54-year-old man, was ejected onto the roadway.  Honolulu Emergency Medical Services responded to the crash and transported the man to an area hospital in critical condition.

The man was not wearing a helmet at the time of the collision.  Police said alcohol appears to have been a contributing factor in the incident, but they do not believe speed played a role.
