PAHOA, HI – A man is under arrest after Hawaii Island police say he intentionally struck a pedestrian in a parking lot in Pahoa.
A press release stated that the incident occurred Jan. 25 at about 7 p.m. at a shopping center in the 15-2700 block of Pāhoa Village Road. The suspect was identified as 40-year-old Spencer Kamuela Young Gun Chun, of Kurtistown.
A Puna patrol officer patrolling the area observed two males potentially involved in an altercation.
The officer learned that a 39-year-old man was crossing a crosswalk to enter the shopping center where a white Jeep driven by Chun had stopped on the roadway. The two men gestured to each other, and the victim then began to cross the crosswalk. Police said the Jeep driver turned towards the victim and accelerated directly towards him, striking him and knocking him to the ground.
The pedestrian was treated for minor injuries at the Hilo Benioff Medical Center. According to police, video surveillance from the shopping center confirmed the driver of the Jeep appearing to intentionally strike the man.
Chun was arrested two days later on charges of second-degree assault and driving without a valid driver’s license.
