KURTISTOWN, HI – A man is facing charges in connection with a fatal pedestrian collision in Kurtistown on Friday evening, according to Big Island Now.
The incident occurred on Orchidland Drive near the intersection with 36th Avenue just after 7 p.m.
A police investigation determined that 21-year-old Maxwell Robertson Sherwood of Kea‘au was in the roadway when he was struck by a 2010 Jeep Wrangler heading east on Orchidland Drive. Sherwood was taken to Hilo Benioff Medical Center and was pronounced dead.
The Jeep driver, identified as 30-year-old Dallas Brooks, was not injured. He was subsequently arrested on charges of first-degree negligent homicide and operating a vehicle under the influence of an intoxicant. A witness said that other vehicles swerved before the collision to avoid Sherwood, who was in the middle of the road and not in a marked crosswalk.
Investigators believe alcohol was a contributing factor in the crash, which shut down a portion of Orchidland Drive for over two hours.
