CAPTAIN COOK, HI – A man is facing charges in connection with a fatal collision that occurred on New Year’s Day, Hawai’i Island police said.
The incident took place shortly after midnight in the 82-1000 block of Kinue Road, a residential area mauka of the Captain Cook police substation.
Police said a man setting up fireworks in the roadway to celebrate the new year was struck by a 2018 Honda Accord heading east on Kinue Road. The Honda then crashed into a parked 1998 Chevrolet pickup truck.
The man struck by the Honda, 52-year-old Jelson Kainue Leslie, was pronounced dead after being taken to the Kona Community Hospital. The Honda driver, identified by police as 23-year-old Kelly Kaikili Losalio of Captain Cook, was charged with operating a vehicle under the influence of an intoxicant (OVUII) and negligent homicide.
Preliminary findings by police indicated that both speed and impairment contributed to the crash.
