AIEA, HI – A man is facing charges in connection with a fatal collision in the Aiea area early Saturday morning, according to a release from the Honolulu Police Department.
The wreck took place along the Moanalua Freeway near the Kaimakani Street overpass at about 4:45 a.m. An investigation by the police department’s Traffic Division found that a 39-year-old man was driving westbound when he attempted to change lanes and collided with a motorcycle heading west at a high rate of speed.
The motorcyclist, a 40-year-old man, was redirected into a metal guardrail and was ejected from the bike onto the roadway. He was pronounced dead after being transported to Pali Momi Medical Center.
The driver of the vehicle was not injured in the crash. He was determined to be under the influence and was arrested for first-degree negligent homicide, and operating a vehicle under the influence of an intoxicant.
Police said it is believed that speed and alcohol were contributing factors in the accident, which remains under investigation.
