HONOLULU, HI – A man is facing charges in connection with a fatal crash that occurred early Saturday morning in the Mililani area.
According to a release from the Honolulu Police Department, the incident happened on Kamehameha Highway just before the Kipapa Gulch Bridge at about 4:30 a.m.
Investigators determined that a 33-year-old man was driving south at a high rate of speed and overtaking other southbound vehicles. He lost control of the vehicle, traveled into the northbound lanes of Kamehameha Highway, and collided with a fence. The vehicle was then redirected into the southbound lanes and crashed into the guardrail.
A juvenile passenger was ejected onto the roadway, and was pronounced dead after being taken to an area hospital.
The driver was arrested on charges of second-degree negligent homicide, and driving without a license.
Police are continuing to investigate the accident, and believe that speed and alcohol were both contributing factors.
