KIHEI, HI- A suspect was arrested in connection with a fatal hit-and-run incident that occurred Monday night in Kihei, police said.
According to Maui Now, a man was fatally struck by a vehicle at the intersection of East Lipoa Street and Kupaliki Loop shortly after 9 p.m. The victim, a 70-year-old Māʻalaea man, was walking across the roadway in a northerly direction when he was struck by a red pickup truck going east on East Lipoa Street at a high rate of speed. The pedestrian died at the scene.
Investigators said the driver of the pickup fled the scene without stopping to check on or help the pedestrian.
A short time later, police said a citizen reported a red 2023 Toyota Tacoma being driven recklessly on Maui Veterans Highway while leaving the Kīhei area. Police found the vehicle and contacted the driver, a 42-year-old man from Wailuku, who was arrested on suspicion of first-degree negligent homicide and collisions involving death.
The preliminary investigation indicates that speed and alcohol were contributing factors in the crash, police said.
