OAHU, HI – A man was arraigned Tuesday in connection with a fatal crash that occurred on the Daniel K. Inouye Highway in Hilo last month, the Hawaii Tribune Herald reported.
43-year-old Kimo K. Medeiros of Kurtistown pleaded not guilty to multiple charges including manslaughter, negligent homicide, and driving under the influence of drugs.
Authorities said Medeiros was driving a Toyota Tacoma pickup truck Oct. 23 at a high rate of speed when he swerved and collided head-on with a 2014 Subaru SUV.
A passenger in the other vehicle, 47-year-old Anna Masaichy of Kailua-Kona, and her three-week old granddaughter were killed in the wreck. Four other people were injured, Masaichy’s 51-year-old husband, who was the driver, along with an 18-year-old woman, a 17-year-old girl and a 4-year-old boy.
Medeiros remains in custody, with his next court appearance scheduled for March 12. His bail was increased to $2 million.
The report said Medeiros had his license suspended twice previously for drunken driving and driving under the influence of drugs.
