KALIHI, HI – A driver involved in a wrong-way collision in the Kalihi area earlier this month has died of his injuries, the Honolulu Police Department reported.
The accident took place May 11 on the North King Street off-ramp of eastbound Moanalua Freeway. According to police, a 93-year-old man was driving in the wrong direction on the freeway shortly before noon, going westbound.
As his vehicle went up the off-ramp, he collided with another car. The first driver was rushed to an emergency room by Honolulu Emergency Medical Services, and was listed in critical condition. Last week, the Medical Examiner’s Office notified the police department that the 93-year-old had been pronounced dead.
The driver of the second vehicle, a 41-year-old man, refused treatment at the scene and transport to the hospital. Both drivers were wearing their seat belts at the time of the wreck.
At the time, investigators did not believe that speed, drugs or alcohol were contributing factors in the crash. The investigation is ongoing.
