MAKIKI, HI – An elderly pedestrian was rushed to the hospital after being struck by a vehicle in the Makiki area, according to the Honolulu Police Department.
Police released details of the March 4 incident that occurred in the vicinity of Ward Avenue and South Beretania Street shortly after 4 p.m.
An 81-year-old man attempting to cross Ward Avenue within the marked crosswalk fell to the ground directly in the path of travel. A motorist who had been stopped at a red light at the intersection proceeded north when the light turned green and struck the pedestrian, who was still lying in the roadway and was out of the driver’s line of sight.
Emergency Medical Services crews transported the 81-year-old to an area hospital, where he was listed in critical condition. The motorist, a 32-year-old man, was not injured and stayed at the scene.
Investigators said neither speed, drugs nor alcohol appear to be contributing factors in this collision.
