HONOLULU, HI – A moped accident that occurred in Honolulu early Saturday morning has claimed the life of a 78-year-old man, reports the Honolulu Star-Advertiser.
The incident occurred as the man was riding a moped north on Kapahulu Avenue near Mooheau Avenue at about 2:30 a.m. According to Honolulu police, the moped hit a pedestrian walking in a marked crosswalk against a red pedestrian signal.
The 78-year-old man was thrown from the moped and transported to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead on Wednesday. He was not wearing a helmet at the time of the collision, investigators said.
The pedestrian, age 77, was taken to the hospital and reported to be in good condition.
At this point, police do not believe that speed, drugs or alcohol were contributing factors in the fatal crash.
