NORTH KONA, HI – The Hawaii Police Department said a Kailua-Kona man was killed in a motorcycle accident on Wednesday night.
Police said in a news release that the crash occurred at the intersection of Palani Road and Kealakaa Street in North Kona shortly before 8 p.m.
An investigation indicated that the 29-year-old victim was riding north on a 2023 Yamaha XTZ690 motorcycle and overtook several vehicles on Palani Road. The motorcyclist then was seen disregarding a red stop light and drove between two vehicles stopped at the intersection.
The motorcycle clipped a 2006 Nissan Frontier pickup truck, police said. The rider was thrown from the bike and struck a utility pole. He was pronounced dead after being taken to the Kona Community Hospital. He was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.
Police believe speed was a contributing factor in the incident.
