HONAUNAU, HI – Hawaii police announced the arrest of one of the drivers involved in a fatal accident in Honaunau on Sunday afternoon.
18-year-old Keawemauhili Iolanikealoha Navas-Loa of Honaunau is charged with second-degree negligent homicide in connection with the incident that occurred near the intersection of Ke Ala O Keawe Road and Honaunau Road.
Investigators determined that Navas-Loa was driving a 2013 Chevrolet Tahoe SUV eastbound at about 2:13 p.m. when he crossed the double solid yellow lines and struck a 2003 Honda Accord sedan head-on.
The Honda driver, 49-year-old Jerome “Tabu” Chadallen Kahoalii Heath of Kailua-Kona, died after being transported to the Kona Community Hospital.
Heath’s 10-year-old son and 7-year-old daughter who were riding with him were taken to the same hospital, where they were treated and released.
Navas-Loa was later released pending further investigation.
