Hilo woman, 21, dies following head-on collision in Kailua-Kona

KAILUA-KONA, HI – One driver was killed and another was arrested following a three-vehicle collision in Kailua-Kona on Sunday evening.

According to a news release from the the Hawaiʻi Police Department, police responded to the crash on Aliʻi Drive near the north end of Kahaluʻu Beach Park shortly before 9:30 p.m.

The preliminary investigation determined that the driver of a 2012 Toyota Tacoma was traveling north on Aliʻi Drive at a high rate of speed for the area. While passing another northbound vehicle in a no-passing zone, the +Tacoma entered the southbound lane and collided head-on with a 2010 Nissan Frontier pickup truck. Following the impact, the Nissan continued onto the makai shoulder of the roadway, where it struck a parked tan Ford Econoline van.

The driver of the Toyota, a 21-year-old woman from Hilo, was pronounced dead after being taken to Kona Community Hospital. She was identified as Hinanui T. Starr-Boyle.

A 25-year-old Hilo man who was a passenger in the Toyota and the driver of the Nissan were both hospitalized in stable condition.

The driver of the Nissan, a 20-year-old Holualoa man, was arrested on suspicion of operating a vehicle under the influence of an intoxicant.

Police determined that none of the occupants involved in the crash were wearing seat belts. Investigators believe peed and impairment were contributing factors in the wreck.
