HILO, HI – A pedestrian collision near an intersection in Hilo Thursday night killed a 69-year-old man, KITV reported.
Hawai’i Island police said the victim of the fatal crash was 69-year-old James Lawrence of Hilo. An investigation determined he was walking near the intersection of Waianuenue Avenue and Rainbow Drive at about 8:23 p.m. when he was struck by a 2015 Subaru sedan going west on Waianuenue Avenue. The pedestrian was not in a marked crosswalk at the time he was hit, police said.
Lawrence was pronounced dead after being taken to the Hilo Benioff Medical Center. The driver of the Subaru, a 62-year-old Hilo woman, was not injured.
The accident investigation is being conducted by the East Hawaii Traffic Enforcement Unit. It is not believed that speed, drugs or alcohol were contributing factors.
