HILO, HI – A man was arrested after an investigation into a crash on the Wainaku Street Bridge in Hilo, Hawai‘i Island police announced.
Police responded to the scene shortly after midnight on Tuesday and found an unoccupied 2005 Honda Pilot sports utility vehicle that had struck the concrete reinforced bridge railing and sustained heavy front-end damage. The driver was not located. A section of the bridge railing was severed, and inspectors with the Hawaii Department of Public Works said the bridge would have to be closed indefinitely until its structural integrity could be inspected.
27-year-old Austin Dasalla-Iriarte of Hilo contacted police later that morning and attempted to report that the vehicle had been stolen, police said. But investigators determined that he had been involved in the crash.
Dasalla-Iriarte was arrested on multiple charges, including false reporting to law enforcement authorities, accidents involving damage to vehicle or property, and driving without a valid driver’s license.
His bail was set at $5,300, and he was being held at the East Hawai‘i Detention Center.
