WAIALUA, HI – The Honolulu Police Department said a two-vehicle collision in Waialua on Sunday afternoon killed a passenger in one of the vehicles.
The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reports the wreck occurred on Kaukonahua Road south of Kaamooloa Road at about 4:36 p.m.
According to the HPD’s Traffic Division, a driver heading north drifted off the roadway onto the grassy shoulder before veering back onto the road and into oncoming traffic, where it collided head-on with another vehicle.
Two men in their 20s or 30s were in the first vehicle. One of them, a passenger, died at the scene. The driver was extricated by firefighters and taken by paramedics to an area hospital, where he was listed in critical condition. The driver of the second vehicle, a 41-year-old woman, was hospitalized in serious condition.
Investigators said speed may have been a contributing factor in the crash, but it remains to be determined whether drugs or alcohol were involved. The man who died was not wearing a seat belt, but the two injured victims were wearing seat belts, police said.
