KAILUA-KONA, HI- The Hawaii Police Department released additional details regarding a fatal accident that occurred in Kailua-Kona early Sunday morning.
Police issued a news release stating the victim of the single-vehicle collision has been identified as 31-year-old Christopher Keaulama Liftee of Kihei, Maui.
Investigators said Liftee was driving a 2004 Nissan Frontier pickup truck near the intersection of Hawai‘i Belt Road (Highway 190) and the Highway 180 junction at about 4:30 a.m. when the vehicle crossed over the double solid lines and struck a rock embankment. The pickup then overturned, hit a utility pole, and went down a 10-foot embankment.
Liftee, who was not wearing his seat belt, was pronounced dead after being taken to the Kona Community Hospital. No one else was in the vehicle.
Police believe that speed and impairment may have been contributing factors in the wreck.
