NORTH KONA, HI – New details have been released regarding a deadly motorcycle crash that occurred in North Kona on Wednesday night, the Honolulu Star-Advertiser reports.
Hawaii island police said the victim of the June 19 incident has been identified as Zachary Mcquaid Stubbs of Kailua-Kona.
Investigators said Stubbs was riding a 2023 Yamaha XTZ690 motorcycle north on Palani Road shortly before 8 p.m. when he overtook several vehicles. He went through a red light and clipped a 2005 Nissan Frontier pickup truck at the intersection with Kealakaa Street.
Stubbs, who was not wearing a helmet, was ejected from the bike and crashed into a utility pole. He died after being taken to Kona Community Hospital.
Speed appears to have been a contributing factor in the accident, police said.
