HILO, HI – An elderly woman has died of injuries suffered in a vehicle collision in Hilo on Jan. 30, according to the Hawaii Police Department.
Police responded to the incident on Kaumana Drive shortly before 5 p.m. and learned that the driver of a 2007 Honda Pilot multi-purpose vehicle was going west when he veered to the right and into a ditch. The Honda then struck a rock embankment, stopped and blocked the westbound lane.
A front seat passenger was extricated from the vehicle by rescue crews and taken to Queen’s Medical Center on Oahu, where she was pronounced dead on Feb. 3. Police have now identified her as 86-year-old Yvonne Mira of Hilo.
The driver of the vehicle, 84-year-old Ken Rosene, was treated and released from the Hilo Benioff Medical Center.
Rosene was subsequently arrested on charges of operating a vehicle under the influence of an intoxicant and first-degree negligent injury. Due to Mira’s death, the case has been changed to a negligent homicide investigation.
