KALIHI, HI – A wrong-way collision in Kalihi on Monday morning left an elderly driver critically injured, the Honolulu Star-Advertiser reported.
The accident took place on the North King Street off-ramp of eastbound Moanalua Freeway. According to police, a 93-year-old man was driving in the wrong direction on the freeway shortly before noon, going westbound.
As his vehicle went up the off-ramp, he collided with another car. The first driver was rushed to an emergency room by Honolulu Emergency Medical Services, and was listed in critical condition.
The driver of the second vehicle, a 41-year-old man, refused treatment at the scene and transport to the hospital. Both drivers were wearing their seat belts at the time of the wreck.
At this point, investigators do not believe that speed, drugs or alcohol were contributing factors in the crash.
