PUKALANI, HI – A driver left the scene of a crash in Pukalani early Wednesday morning that left two people injured, according to Maui Now.
Maui police stated that the driver of a 2020 Honda Ridgeline was making a left turn from Old Haleakalā Highway to head west on Haleakalā Highway at about 12:14 a.m. when the vehicle collided head-on with a 1998 Toyota Tacoma that was traveling east on Haleakalā Highway.
The Toyota driver, a 19-year-old man from Makawao, was critically injured and was taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center. A 32-year-old woman who was a passenger in the Honda was transported to the same hospital with multiple injuries.
Investigators said the driver of the Honda, identified as 31-year-old Kaleo Kubo, ran away from the crash scene in an unknown direction and is now being sought for the accident. He is also wanted for an active no-bail warrant. He was described as 5 feet 3 inches tall, weighs 155 pounds, and has black hair and brown eyes.
Police are still trying to determine whether speed, drugs or alcohol were contributing factors in the wreck.
