Driver sought in fatal hit-and-run incident near Lono Avenue

KAHULUI, HI – A man died after being struck by a hit-and-run driver in Kahului early Monday morning, police said.

According to Hawaii News Now, the incident occurred in the area of Lono Avenue and Kaahumanu Avenue.  Maui police said a 57-year-old man was lying in the roadway at about 3 a.m. and was struck by a vehicle.  He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver involved fled the scene of the crash in an unknown direction without stopping to help, and is now being sought by police.

Investigators are trying to find out whether speed, drugs, or alcohol were contributing factors in the incident.
