LIHUE, HI – A 21-year-old driver was killed in a wreck on Kuhio Highway in Lihue last week, according to a Kauai Now report.
The single-vehicle crash occurred Jan. 1 near the Wilcox Medical Center at about 3:30 a.m. A preliminary investigation by Kauai police determined that the driver of a 2006 Toyota truck was heading south when the vehicle collided with a stone wall and a utility pole along the shoulder of the roadway.
The driver, identified as Talia Jimenez of KĹŤloa, died at the scene. No one else was in the vehicle. Speed may have been a contributing factor in the accident, according to initial findings. Results of toxicology tests were being awaited to ascertain whether impairment was a factor as well.
The incident shut down Kūhiō Highway in both directions for about three hours while the scene was being cleared and investigated. Kaua’i Island Utility Cooperative crews were also dispatched to clear downed power lines.
