KONA, HI – The Hawaii Police Department is investigating a car crash Saturday night that left a driver critically injured.
According to a news release, the collision occurred on Māmalahoa Highway near Pu‘u Wa‘awa‘a in the district of Kona at about 10:11 p.m.
Police determined that the driver of a silver 2023 Jeep Wrangler was heading south near the 23 mile-marker when the vehicle ran off the right shoulder and struck a wood utility pole. The Jeep rolled over several times and the driver, a 54-year-old Kailua-Kona man, was ejected.
The man was taken to the Kona Community Hospital and was subsequently transported to the Queen’s Medical Center on Oahu where he was listed in critical condition. He was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, investigators said.
Anyone who may have witnessed the crash was asked to contact the police department’s Traffic Enforcement Unit.
