WAIKAPU, HI – Authorities said a driver has been arrested following a hit-and-run incident in Maui that left a moped driver critically injured.
According to a report by KHON, the crash occurred on Honoapiʻilani Highway near Wilikona Place in Waikapu.
Investigators determined that the operator of a 2021 Zhong moped was headed south on the highway Tuesday at about 10:12 a.m. and was struck from behind by a 2004 Pontiac sedan. The moped driver, a 32-year-old Waihuku woman, was dragged after the collision and was critically injured. She was transported to the Maui Memorial Medical Center.
Maui officials said the driver of the Pontiac fled the scene without stopping to help, but was followed by a good Samaritan who contacted police. Officers then located the vehicle involved and stopped the driver in the Olowalu area.
The suspected driver, a 38-year-old Lahaina man, now faces several charges including first-degree negligent injury, collisions involving death or serious bodily injury, and operating a vehicle under the influence of an intoxicant. The preliminary investigation indicated that alcohol and drugs were contributing factors in the accident.
