KOLOA, HI – Police said a driver was killed and a passenger was injured when their vehicle crashed in Koloa on Friday night.

Hawaii News Now reported details of the accident that occurred on Maluhia Road at about 10 p.m.  Investigators determined that a man was driving a 1991 Dodge truck northbound when he drove off the road and collided with a tree.

The driver, a 33-year-old Lihue man, suffered fatal injuries.  A passenger, a 32-year-old woman from Lihue, sustained injuries that were not life-threatening and was taken to the Wilcox Memorial Hospital.

The incident shut down Maluhia Road in both directions for about three hours during the accident investigation.  Police suspect that speed and impairment were contributing factors.
