HILO, HI – Hawai‘i Island police said they have launched a coroner’s inquest investigation into a fatal crash that occurred in Hilo on Friday evening.
Police issued a news release on the incident that occurred on Railroad Avenue near the intersection with Lanikaula Street at about 7:15 p.m.
Investigators determined that the driver of a 2001 Mazda multi-purpose vehicle was headed north on Railroad Avenue when the vehicle veered to the right onto a gravel shoulder area and traveled approximately 150 feet before striking a shipping container.
The driver, a 59-year-old Mountain View man, was pronounced dead after being taken to the Hilo Medical Center. His identity was not immediately released. No one else was in the vehicle.
The investigation has shown that speed appears to have been the main factor in the crash.
