Driver dies after crashing into concrete pillar on Nimitz Highway

HONOLULU, HI – A driver was killed in a single-vehicle wreck along Nimitz Highway early Monday morning, the Honolulu Police Department said.

The accident happened near Valkenburgh Street shortly before 4 a.m.  Police said a 42-year-old man was driving westbound at a high rate of speed and crashed into a concrete support pillar near the intersection.

The motorist, who was wearing a seatbelt, was pronounced dead at the scene.

It appears that speed was a contributing factor in the fatal crash, according to police, but it was not yet known whether drugs or alcohol were factors.

The investigation is ongoing.
