MAKIKI, HI – A driver was critically injured in a car wreck in the Makiki area on Friday night, according to the Honolulu Police Department.
The single-vehicle accident occurred on Tantalus Drive north of Kolonahe Place shortly after 10 p.m.
A police investigation determined that a 59-year-old man was driving northbound at a high rate of speed when he lost control of the vehicle, traveled into the southbound lane and into the left shoulder, before colliding with a tree where the car came to rest.
The motorist, who was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the collision, was rushed by Emergency Medical Services to an area hospital in critical condition.
Investigators looking into the incident believe that speed was a contributing factor but have yet to determine whether drugs or alcohol played any role.
