KAILUA-KONA, HI – A driver was arrested following a pedestrian fatality in Kailua-Kona early Monday morning, Hawai’i Island police said.
Officers were dispatched to the scene on Queen Ka’ahumanu Highway just south of the Kaloko/HonokĹŤhau intersection at 3:54 a.m. They determined that the driver of a 2015 Subaru Forester was headed north when he crossed over the white fog line and struck a pedestrian.
The victim, a 38-year-old Kailua-Kona man, died after being rushed to the Kona Community Hospital. Police said the driver of the Subaru abandoned the vehicle and left the scene but was later located a block away and arrested.
The suspect, identified as 34-year-old Garrett Duran of Kailua-Kona, faces multiple charges including operating a vehicle under the influence of an intoxicant, negligent homicide, and failure to render aid. He was being held at the
Kealakehe Police Station while the investigation continues.
