NORTH KONA, HI – A driver was killed in a two-car crash in North Kona early Friday morning, Hawai‘i Island police said.
The accident happened at about 4:47 a.m. on Māmalahoa Highway (Highway 190), just north of the 23-mile marker. Police determined that a southbound 2015 Subaru Forester, driven by a 40-year-old Hilo woman, crossed the double solid yellow line in an attempt to pull over onto the mauka shoulder of the roadway, as there was no shoulder on the makai side.
While crossing over the centerline, the Subaru collided head-on with a northbound 2000 Acura Integra sedan. The Acura driver, identified as Alvin Godfrey Castro II of Kailua-Kona, was pronounced dead after being taken to the North Hawaii Community Hospital. The Subaru driver was taken to the Kona Community Hospital. No details were released on her condition.
Police have launched a negligent homicide investigation into the wreck and asked any witnesses to contact them.
