NORTH KONA, HI – A husband and wife were killed when their vehicle was involved in a collision on Queen Ka‘ahumanu Highway, in North Kona on Tuesday morning.
According to Hawai‘i Island police, the driver of a 2021 Kia Forte was headed south on the highway at about 5:41 and was attempting to overtake multiple vehicles, including a tractor-trailer carrying a full tank of fuel. The Kia collided head-on with a northbound 2004 Nissan Frontier pickup truck near the 79.5-mile marker.
The Kia driver, 51-year-old Reginald Kaleilehua Tolentino Jr., and his wife and passenger, 55-year-old Colette Marie Kaleialoha Tolentino, died after being taken to Kona Community Hospital. The couple were from Waimea.
The Nissan driver, a 55-year-old man, suffered life-threatening injuries and was taken to Queen’s Medical Center.
The Area II Traffic Enforcement Unit is investigating the crash.
