KAHULUI, HI – Maui police responded to the scene of a fatal pedestrian accident in Kahului on Saturday morning, Hawaii News Now reported.
The victim was a 71-year-old Kahului woman who was operating a personal electronic wheelchair. She was killed in a collision near Queen Ka’ahumanu Center shortly before 11:20 a.m.
Investigators said the driver of a Lexus SUV had made a left turn from the center onto West Wakea Avenue near Onehee Avenue when she struck the pedestrian. She was going north at the time within the marked crosswalk on West Wakea Avenue.
The woman was pronounced dead after being taken to the Maui Memorial Medical Center. The 69-year-old Wailuku woman who was driving the Lexus was not hurt and stayed at the scene.
Police investigating the crash said it did not appear that speed was a factor but they are still trying to determine whether drugs or alcohol were involved.
