KAPOLEI, HI – Police said one person was killed and another injured in a high-speed crash in the Kapolei area early Saturday morning.
According to a a news release from the Honolulu Police Department, the single-vehicle accident happened on Farrington Highway, west of Aliinui Drive at about 2:26 a.m.
It was reported to the department’s Traffic Division that a 19-year-old man was driving east at a high rate of speed when he lost control, and the vehicle struck the center median. The vehicle then rolled over multiple times and collided with a light pole before coming to rest.
The driver and his 18-year-old passenger were both ejected. The 19-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene while the 18-year-old was transported to an area hospital in critical condition.
Neither person was wearing a seat belt at the time of the collision. Investigators believe speed was a contributing factor in the fatal wreck but have yet to determine whether drugs or alcohol were involved.
This is the 47th Traffic Fatality on Oahu this year compared to 23 at the same time in 2024.
