PEARL CITY, HI – A car crash along a highway in Pearl City early Saturday morning sent a driver to the hospital, KITV reports.

Honolulu police, firefighters and other first responders were called to the scene on Kamehameha Highway near Waimano Home Road shortly after midnight.

An investigation determined that a 23-year-old driver was heading west on the highway at a high rate of speed.  The driver lost control of the vehicle, went off the road and crashed into two concrete pillars in the median.

The driver was transported to an area hospital in critical condition but was later upgraded to serious condition.

The highway was closed for the crash response and investigation before reopening shortly before 3 a.m.
