HANA, HI – An accident in Hana involving an all-terrain vehicle sent a teenage boy to the hospital in critical condition, reports KITV.
Authorities said the crash occurred Thursday afternoon while a 16-year-old boy was driving a Kawasaki Bayou 250 ATV in a parking area shortly after 12 p.m.
When the driver made a right turn, one of his passengers who was seated on the rear cargo rack fell from the vehicle onto the road, according to police. The passenger, a 15-year-old boy, was first taken to the Hana Medical Clinic then was flown to Maui Memorial Medical Center with life-threatening injuries. Another passenger, a 15-year-old boy, was also on board.
None of the three teens were wearing helmets at the time of the crash. Investigators do not believe that speed, drugs or alcohol were contributing factors.
