KULA, HI – Authorities said a collision in Kula on Friday afternoon claimed the life of a bicycle rider.
KITV reports the crash occurred on Haleakala Highway about a mile south of mile marker 6. The victim was a 68-year-old man who was riding along the highway with a Maui Downhill riding group at about 2:30 p.m.
The man crossed over the yellow double-sided lane and collided with a vehicle traveling on Haleakala Highway.
The bicycle rider, who was wearing a helmet, died at the scene. The driver of the vehicle and a passenger were not injured.
The driver was reported to have stopped after the accident and stayed at the scene. Police are continuing to investigate the cause of the crash.
