NORTH KONA, HI – The Hawaii Police Department said one person was killed and another injured in a single-vehicle crash on Mamalahoa Highway in North Kona on Tuesday afternoon.
In a news release, police said their investigation found that the driver of a 2014 Kia Sorento traveling south shortly before 12:23 p.m. had crossed over the solid white fog line near the 31.5 marker and drove off the right shoulder of the roadway. The vehicle then went down an embankment and overturned.
A passenger was pronounced dead after being taken to the Kona Community Hospital. He was identified as 78-year-old Jeffrey Lawrence Gross of Papaikou. The driver of the Kia, a 48-year-old woman from Papaikou, was transported to the same hospital for treatment.
The Area II Traffic Enforcement Unit is investigating the accident, which police said was the 17th traffic fatality this year compared to 8 at this time last year.
