HONOMU, HI – A head-on crash on Mamalahoa Highway Monday evening left one person dead and two others hospitalized, police said.

KHON reported details of the wreck in Honomu, where Honolulu police responded to the scene at 6:07 p.m.  According to investigators, the driver of a 2019 Ford pickup truck was heading north and overtaking other vehicles on the highway.

The Ford collided with a 2023 Kia sedan that was traveling south towards Hilo, causing the sedan to catch fire.

A 48-year-old woman from California riding in the front seat of the Kia was trapped in the vehicle.  Once the fire was extinguished, she was taken to Hilo Medical Center and pronounced dead.

The driver of the Kia, a 22-year-old man, was being treated at Queens Medical Center with life-threatening injuries.  The Ford driver, a 35-year-old Papaaloa man, was listed in stable condition at Hilo Medical Center.
